What is Hemp Clothing? A Complete Guide to Sustainable Style

Hemp is a powerhouse of a plant with dozens of uses from medicine, to textile, to biofuel.

When it comes to hemp clothing, few textiles are as good for your body– and the planet. Hemp is one of the most, if not the most, sustainable and versatile fabrics in the world.

Strong, breathable, and biodegradable, it’s a natural and often regenerative alternative to resource-intensive textiles like cotton and polyester. At Juana, we design with hemp not because it is trendy, but because it reflects our core values: natural living, conscious creation, and sustainable design.

If you’re curious about hemp clothing—how it’s made, why it’s eco-friendly, and what makes Juana’s approach unique—you’re in the right place!

What is Hemp Clothing?

To put it simply, hemp clothing is clothing made from hemp fabric. Made from the stalks of the hemp plant (Cannabis sativa), fibers are extracted (bast), softened, and spun into yarn. To get a feel for hemp fabric in its rawest form, depending on processing, 100% hemp fabric can feel similar to linen, canvas, or even silk blends.

The word canvas actually stems from the word cannabis, since the first canvas sails for sailboats were actually made from cannabis!

Unlike cotton, hemp doesn’t need heavy irrigation or pesticides, making it a low-impact, eco-friendly fabric.

Hemp has a history of use as a textile that dates back over 6,000 years. It is one of the most ancient textiles still in use today.

The ancients knew what a powerful fabric hemp can make, as it is eight times stronger than other commonly used fabrics. It is also very durable and has been proven to be more pathogen-resistant than cotton or other fabrics.

Hemp fabric is a stand-alone when it comes to its benefits as a textile, for the planet, and for your body. Mold-resistant, antibacterial, UV-protectant, 100% biodegradable, capable of regenerating soils and saving water, hemp is an excellent alternative to other modern textiles.

The Why: Why Hemp is a Sustainable Fabric

Hemp is often called a regenerative crop because of its positive impact on the environment. Here’s why:

  • Low water useHemp needs far less water than cotton. In addition, hemp can easily grow in poor soil and does not require a lot of amendments like fertilizers and pesticides.

  • Minimal chemicals – Naturally occurring essential oils and other chemicals present in hemp make the plant inherently resistant to most pests and weeds compared to other crops.

  • Soil support – Deep roots prevent erosion and restore nutrients. In fact, not only does hemp have deep taproots, but it can also regenerate soil by pulling out heavy metals from the soil and helping to rebuild healthy soils. Instead of further degrading soil, hemp can actually help improve soil structure and improve water retention. Additionally, hemp pulls carbon out of the atmosphere and puts it back into the soil, where it belongs. This process is called carbon sequestration, and it is the reason why hemp is known as a regenerative crop. It goes beyond sustainability to the regeneration of the planet and the carbon sink.

  • High yieldProduces more fiber per acre than most crops. It also sequesters more carbon per acre than forests or other crops.

  • Biodegradable – Breaks down naturally at the end of its lifecycle. Unlike textiles commonly used in fast fashion, such as polyester and nylon, hemp naturally decomposes without polluting the environment with microplastics and toxic chemicals

At Juana, sustainability also means responsibility in production and supply chain. It is vital to us and our mission that we partner with ethical manufacturers. Members of our team visit factories in person several times a year, working directly with pattern makers and production teams. This hands-on approach is integral to who we are and also ensures transparency, reduces emissions, and keeps collaboration intentional.

How Hemp Clothing Feels

Hemp is a beautiful and impactful textile that can totally revolutionize our approach to clothing and its impact on the environment. However, how does it feel? Hemp clothing is durable, breathable, and comfortable. Here’s what to expect:

  • Strong and long-lasting – Outlasts cotton over time.

  • Breathable – Wicks moisture and regulates temperature.

  • Hypoallergenic – Gentle on sensitive skin.

  • Softens with wear – Unlike other materials, hemp actually gets better with use. After each wash, hemp fabric gets softer and more malleable.

This makes hemp ideal for everyday essentials—from T-shirts and dresses to activewear, underwear, and all sorts of garments.

Juana’s Approach: Blending Natural Fabrics

Our approach at Juana is unique in that we don’t just rely on hemp alone; we incorporate other natural textiles that pair beautifully with hemp and are also easier on Mother Earth.

Additionally, there are lots of natural fibers that blend really well with hemp and enhance some of its qualities, and add their own benefit, balancing function, comfort, and beauty:

  • Hemp + Cotton – Everyday softness with added strength.

  • Hemp + Silk – A graceful drape with natural durability.

  • Hemp + Other Naturals – Custom blends tailored to the needs of each garment.

Each blend is chosen intentionally. Hemp provides structure and resilience. Cotton brings familiarity, comfort, and function. Silk adds movement and elegance. Together, they create clothing that feels grounded, versatile, and timeless.

We oversee every step—from sourcing to weaving to dyeing—to ensure the integrity of both the materials and the finished piece. When designs call for a blend of hemp and silk, we ensure that the fibers are sourced ethically, interwoven, dyed responsibly, and made under ethical conditions to uphold the utmost integrity in each garment that Juana offers.

This level of attention enables us to create the highest quality clothing while staying true to our sustainable and intentional design philosophy.

Hemp Clothing vs. Cotton

While both hemp and cotton are natural fibers, their environmental impact and durability are very different.

Hemp requires far less water and overall inputs (think: fertilizers and pesticides), and has the potential to improve soil health while sequestering carbon. Cotton, on the other hand, is water-intensive and often relies heavily on chemicals, leaving soils depleted.

Hemp also produces more fiber per acre and is significantly stronger, meaning garments last longer and soften beautifully over time. Cotton may feel softer right away, but hemp quickly becomes just as comfortable—while offering a much smaller environmental footprint.

A blend of cotton and hemp is a beautiful alternative, as it combines two natural fabrics that ultimately create a lovely textile that has multiple uses in fashion design.

Why Hemp is the Matriarch of Sustainable Style

It’s no secret that fast fashion creates tremendous waste and pollution. Fast fashion is responsible for 10% of global carbon emissions, more than all international flights and maritime emissions combined, and, shockingly, as much as the emissions generated from the entire European Union. Drying up freshwater resources, polluting rivers, lakes, and oceans, a whopping 85% of fast fashion garments end up in landfills each year.

According to Earth.org, “Even washing [fast fashion] clothes releases 500,000 tons of microfibres into the ocean each year, the equivalent of 50 billion plastic bottles.”

Fast fashion and unsustainable textiles cause immense damage to our beloved Earth and affect the greater biome of the world, impacting human health and all life on Earth.

Hemp offers an alternative:

  • A natural fiber with a low environmental footprint.

  • Garments designed to last instead of being discarded.

  • A way to align personal style with sustainable values.

At Juana, we see hemp as a cornerstone of eco-friendly fashion. Every garment reflects our commitment to natural materials, ethical partnerships, and intentional design.

Final Thoughts

Hemp clothing is strong, breathable, and Earth-friendly. But more than that, it represents a shift toward fashion that values transparency, longevity, sustainability, and a connection to nature.

At Juana, hemp is not just a fabric. It’s part of our philosophy—an expression of natural living and conscious creation. By blending hemp with other natural fibers, we create clothing that’s versatile, sustainable, and designed with care.

If you’re building a wardrobe rooted in sustainable style, hemp is a fabric worth choosing—and Juana is here to make that choice intentional, beautiful, and of course, stylish!
